City of Wheat Ridge Business Startup Registration

For a City of Wheat Ridge Business License, please return the City of Wheat Ridge Sales/Use Tax General Business License application to the Tax Office with all questions answered as completely as possible. One of the most common omissions is line 12. This information is important in identifying authorized agents of the business. Information on line 12 as well as emergency or home phone numbers is confidential and only available to tax department personnel. If you have a Wheat Ridge business location your application will be processed through and approved by the Zoning Department. Sometimes a location in Wheat Ridge may not be zoned for the use you intend, therefore prior to signing any lease/rent agreements, please stop by or call the Zoning department 303.235.2846. Depending on the type of business, i.e., precious stones, firearms, etc., your application may additionally be processed through the Police Department prior to issuance of the license. After all applicable approvals have been made, your license will be issued by the Sales Tax Division.

Wheat Ridge Colorado Use Taxes

If your business is located in Wheat Ridge Colorado, you will receive a Use Tax Due Notice. A Use Tax is due on all items where a city sales tax has not been paid. This would include but not be limited to: purchases from the previous owner not considered stock in trade, (i.e., furniture, fixtures, equipment) etc. You will need to reference your purchase agreement as to the value stated in the contract for tangible personal property, this amount is subject to the City 3.0% use tax. Invoices need to be checked on new purchases to insure that a city sales tax was paid. If the tax paid on any item is less than 7.6% the city tax probably has not been paid. This will most likely occur when you are having a item delivered to your location. Items converted from a personal asset to a business asset must be declared at a fair market value and the 3.0% use tax assessed on the amount. All items you are leasing or renting are subject to the 3.0% use tax for the duration of the lease/rent period. After the initial Use Tax obligation has been met, you will report use tax on your regular Sales/Use Tax Return. Use tax must be paid on all items where you are the final consumer-including but not limited to: office supplies, equipment, subscriptions, trade journals, stock purchased for resale and converted to personal use, etc. Once you have begun operations, you will receive a sales/use tax return at the reporting interval you have requested (or been assigned). These returns along with payment are due by the 20th of the month, following tax liability period. To be on time, the return must be in the tax office or postmarked by the 20th of the month. If payment is late your account is assessed penalty and interest. The minimum penalty is $15.00 or 10% of the amount on line 5 of the return, whichever amount is greater. Interest is assessed at the rate of 1% per month.
